Patients in Louisiana will be able to access medical marijuana in 2018 through the Department of Health. Physicians have already begun applying for a permit to recommend medical marijuana and companies have been selected to grow and manufacture medical marijuana products. Louisiana State University, one of the organizations approved to cultivate marijuana plants, expects to have their product available by the summer of 2018.
Who is eligible?
Specific requirements have not been finalized but it’s likely that patients will have to be residents of Louisiana and 18 years of age or older, or have a parent or guardian who will act as their caregiver. A tentative list of qualifying medical conditions has been published:
- HIV positive, AIDS
- Cachexia (wasting syndrome)
- Seizure disorders
- Crohn’s disease
- Muscular dystrophy
- Multiple sclerosis
